Music Lessons and Marketing

In 2009 my music studio was in more trouble then I wanted to admit. The recession was doing a number on my school. Mom and Dads lost jobs. Panic was in the air.

$200 a month for your 16 year old to play in a rock band just wasn't going to happen. Teenagers will pulled and were instructed to put their own garage bands together. Just like we did it in the old days.

One day I received a phone call from a mom to inform me she was pulling her 12 year old and 14 year old. "There have been too many layoffs at my company. We have to really watch our money now". I understood. The next call was from a mom with a 5 year old wanted guitar lessons. "We really want your child to succeed with music. 5 is just too young for guitar lessons"

Something is wrong with this model.

I had seen enough 4,5 and 6 year olds try music lessons to know what the outcome would be. A quick infusion of cash but kids this age are rarely successful in private lessons. The private lesson rarely lives up to their fantasy of what playing music would be like. 2-4 months later they quit to not only never return, but to often give up on music all together.  

So what was I going to do?  I was purging students. I had limited funds to invest in marketing. I had no choice but to get creative and try something different, something radical.
